THE ISLAND OF LOKRUM – PERFECT IDEA FOR A DAY TRIP FROM DUBROVNIK
If you find yourself in Dubrovnik and want to go somewhere on a day trip by boat, the island of Lokrum is a great idea. Conveniently located on a short ferry or boat ride from Dubrovnik, the island of Lokrum is a perfect location where you can spend the entire day exploring its natural beauties and enjoying its wonderful subtropical vegetation, and even get close to the peacocks that inhabit this island.
It takes only about 15 minutes to get there, but once you've set foot on this magical island, it's like you've been teleported to some surreal place. Once you arrive, you can take a walk along its breathtaking Botanical Gardens, planted in the 19th century, as well as discover ruins of Benedictine Monastery that was built in medieval times. Apart from that, you can swim in the Dead Sea lake – a natural pool made by years of cliff erosion.
The island became a very popular location because of many legends – according to one of them, Richard the Lion-Heart was cast ashore to the island of Lokrum after being shipwrecked in 1192. But there's even more, especially if you love mysteries. The island is said to be cursed for everyone who wants it for themselves, and it was the Benedictines who cursed it after the island was bought by several wealthy citizens of Dubrovnik.
Game of Thrones fan? Then you will be happy to find out that it was the island of Lokrum where several scenes from the popular series were filmed. The island of Lokrum was used as a stand-in for the city of Qarth, visited by Daenerys Targaryen in season two. Apart from that, some of the garden scenes were filmed in the botanical gardens on Lokrum, as well as in the Former Benedictine monastery.
